Chapter 15

Reporting for duty that afternoon, Serena clocked in and stowed her belongings. She hoped that it would be a busy night. She sure didn’t want to sit ever again. The car ride there had been very uncomfortable.

Thankfully, many residents required her assistance, and she scurried around from room to room. When Mr. Abernathy called for help, she immediately went to see what he needed. Stopping outside his door, she laughed. Someone had decorated his nameplate with colorful stickers.

There was still a smile on her face as she walked through the door. Waving at Waylon, she addressed the grumpy man in the wheelchair. “Hi, Mr. Abernathy. What can I help you with?”

“Help me to the bathroom,” he said tersely.

Serena knew it was hard for residents to ask for help for something as intimate as using the bathroom. Especially for an older man to have to rely on a young woman. She tried to be clinical and efficient to give each resident as much privacy as possible.

When she had settled him again in his wheelchair, she asked, “Anything else that I can do for you?”

“I bet you don’t have time to read to me again?” came the irascible response.

“Sure, I do. Let me go check on two more lights, and then everyone should be squared away for a bit.” Without waiting for his response, she darted down the hall to the next resident’s room. In fifteen minutes, she was back at Mr. Abernathy’s door. “Here I am. That didn’t take too long,” she chirped after knocking to announce her arrival.

“Read this one,” he said, thrusting another envelope at her.

With permission, Serena sat carefully on his bed, appreciating the soft padding under her sore bottom. Carefully, she opened the envelope and pulled out a single sheet of paper. Before she even started reading, Serena could tell this was a much different type of letter. There were no drawings or decorations. The handwriting was in cursive and not in a childish print. She glanced up at the old man to make sure he wanted her to read this.

“Go on. I need to remember the bad, too,” he said with a frown.

Serena began to read. The letter started with goodbye. Coralee’s parents had discovered her relationship with Edward. Horrified by the unusual relationship, they were forcing her to marry the son of a friend who lived on the other side of the country. Coralee’s letter shared that she had considered running away, but her father had threatened to ruin Edward financially. She had bribed the cook to post the letter for her.

Serena’s hands shaking with the grief and pain contained in that thin sheet of parchment, she dashed away a tear that rolled down her cheek. “I’m so sorry, Mr. Abernathy. Did you follow her?” she asked.

The old man shook his head sadly and held out his hand for the letter. Serena watched him stow it in his box with such care. He’d held on to these letters for decades. They were the only things he’d had to remember her.
